LATE NIGHT WITH THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS

The New Christy Minstrels, is a large-ensemble folk music group founded by Randy Sparks in 1961, and is still under his direction. From their beginnings as prominent figures in the early-1960s U.S. folk revival, the group recorded over 20 albums and had several hits. The New Christy Minstrels', like the Ray Conniff Singers, have always been part of my Christmas, and my parents had two of their joyous seasonal albums. The key to the record's success is that it doesn't rely on standards, the backbone of the record is comprised of original compositions or new tunes from outside writers. It's true that few of the songs even approach the quality of standards, but it is fun to hear fresh holiday tunes, even if they're decades old, and I love their folk-pop style of music. Here are my two favorite carols from them....

  7. I remember them! My folks had one of their holiday albums...no idea what happened to it. "Here We Come A-Caroling" puts new lyrics to a the old "Here We Come A-Wassailing". Very fun!
