New Years Traditions Alive and Well

A HAPPY NEW YEAR TOAST TO YOU ALL!

Happy New Year's Day!!!!! Did I really just shout that? Ohhhhh* the noise and how can one see with all that light?  Well, as you can see the traditions here at the Casa are still intact, and last night was another memorable dinner party, with all my guest dressing up. The Mistress hit a wall around 3:30 I hear, was undressed ,and slipped off to slumber land. But fear not, I was up and got my New Years dinner prepared and placed in the oven.......

Many of us in the Pennsylvania will be sitting down to traditional pork and sauerkraut. According to Pennsylvania German folklore, the pig roots forward, so if your first meal includes pork, you’ll move ahead all year. The swelling of the sauerkraut symbolizes bounty. The Pennsylvania Dutch tradition is to serve pork and sauerkraut as the first meal of the New Year to bring good luck for the year. My grandmother always cooked it every year and she would usually have the meal accompanied by some yummy mashed potatoes, greens, and sometimes a little apple sauce to sweet the meal, and start with a champagne toast. This is definitely one of my all time favorite foods combinations and I make sure that I have this meal every January 1st. now on to the Mummer's Parade!

Enjoy your day and have a wonderful New Year!

  5. I hear my grandmother and mother too, saying identical comments regarding New Year superstitions. I think they were cut out of the same rug. A traditional side dish for this meal in our home was stewed tomatoes, thickened somewhat. They continue to grace our table when pork and sauerkraut is the meal of the evening. I ate it, but never cared for it, but loved the smell!

I had no idea about the pork in the first meal of the year bit. Good thing I had sausage biscuits first thing in the morning today.

    Happy New Year!

  8. We always had pork & sauerkraut on New Years Day when I was a kid. My family still does it...but I always hated the stuff. This year I decided that while I detest the food, I like the tradition -- so I changed it to barbeque & cole slaw. Still pork & cabbage, right?!
