VELVETY GOODNESS

Well, this weekend hasn't been a complete wash out. With rains and dark clouds rolling in late Friday night, there wasn't much to be done in the way of the gardening. Though I did get my Datura Ballerinas planted Friday evening, and a quick trip in after work to Ashcombe for some more gems. Thanks heavens though for the potting shed. I was able to still do potting of annuals and some repotting of other plants we had, while listening to the rain on the roof, and listening to music on my old and faithful battery-operated radio, listening to the Met. I swear flowers like music. With getting my work done mid- afternoon, I finally went to check out a maroon bakery I'd been wanting to go try. Sweet Velvet, over on Market Street in Camp Hill.

And it didn't disappoint. Now mind you, I'm not a huge, sweet person. I prefer salty and savory over sweet most days, but I've been craving macaroons since I moved from New Hope that had a place I'd get them. This place really lived up to it's name. Velvety goodness. Upon getting in and checking everything out, the girl beyond the counter asked if we'd been in before. Not having been she offered us a free macaron to try. So light, fresh and airy, and the perfect amount of sweetness. The interior is bright and inviting, and they offered a huge variety of flavors. They had the basic flavors, in addition to the like of Rose-Berry, Birthday Cake, Lavender Limoncello, Fig Honey Goat cheese, and many others. The service was great, quick, and a friendly and very knowledgeable staff. I wanted one of each. I ended up getting a box of 10, and a box of three. At $2.50 a cookie, it is not something I would do all the time, but they are worth it!!! And the best part? Made fresh daily and locally owned.
I knew I had to take a snap of this for Ms Scarlett. It was my sample I tried and a good choice too.
If you're in the area or ever visit go check them out.Sweet Velvet. With rains continuing...it's been a lazy day today; Dinner is on tap with the Capital Street Duo later at a pub. I don't know why, but every time I'm in a bakery with macaroons, the number Think Pink with Kay Thompson from Funny Face comes to mind.

  1. Now you are speaking my language! I love a good macaroon. Those pictures are mouthwatering. I'd love to try some of these flavors too. Being in a bakery with macaroons or a macaroons shop makes me happy. I think it's all the color, so I can see why the musical number would come to mind. I love Kay Thompson, and her "Bazzaz"! This is one of my favorite numbers in all of musical films. I saw it a few months ago on the big screen at the old theater here, and it was too good for words.

  2. Call me strange but this made me very happy seeing all the color. And what's not to love about a good macroon? Looks like a lovely place. I always wondered what the song was from.

  3. My kind of weekend. I actually love working out in the garden in the rain sometimes. It would be heaven to hear the rain in the shed while potting and listening to music. Throw in some of those macaroons, and I'd be happy.

  5. Fun indeed and so cool too! Love the colors of macaroons. What a pretty place. Hearing the rain in your shed while panting must have been nice. Calming.

  10. I've never quite seen the appeal of macarons, sorry - but I love, love, love Kay Thompson and Think Pink! One of the highlights of my now-legendary rise to Mistress MJ's challenge to catalogue the "Top Ten Campest Moments in Cinema" back in 2012... Jx

    2. I'm with you Jon on macaroons; my mother used to make them. I didn't like them then and I don't like them now. Currently contemplating making a raspberry/mascarpone cake when the family come over.

  13. I love the Think Pink number, and I have no idea why I never made the connection between it and The Devil Wears Prada, it's an obvious inspiration for Miranda Priestly. The only drawback to that video is that it always leaves out Kay Thompson's line right after the song where she announces "I wouldn't be caught dead in pink."

    1. I agree about that line being cut off too....but till you mentioned it...never saw the connection to Devil Wears Prada...till you now mentioned it. Your correct. If that wasn't inspiration Ill eat out some buttchops.

  16. It's beyond me how you eat like you do, and still stay in shape and fit looking. Unless it's all going to that fabulous backside? I think macaroons are pretty, but I don't like hazelnut flavor.

    Tundra Bunny here...

Well, I've never had a macaron, but I do love orange creamsicles and coconut macaroon cookies -- is that close enough?
