SUMMER PLEASURES

I don't know about you, but summer is my all time favorite season. While their all beautiful in their own way and reasons, summer for me is it. I love the seaside, the mountains and the glamping, the heat and sun on my skin, the crickets and katydids in the trees at night chirping, the longer daylight and the open air of the abode. And let's face it, men wear much fewer clothes!!!!!!! So far, I have only used my air about four times.  About a week or two ago fellow blogger and all wise Dr Spo had a clever post about  Without which summer is wasted...things that are a must to do before summer ends and things we remember from years past that just made summer. And Spo is right too, once summer is over, they just aren't the same. So Spo  is what inspired this post. One of the first things I love in the summer are my plaid shirts! I love me my plaid!

Pimm's Cock-a-tails
Pimm's cock-a-tails are a must for me for day drinking. They are light , refreshing in hot temps, and wont dehydrate you like other beverages. I usually make mine in a highball, filled with ice. About half the glass filled with Pimms topped off with iced tea and then add an array of fruit which will add further flavor. These were with blueberries. I have in the past used cucumber and strawberries together, or orange slices. VERY REFRESHING. The Raven keeps a bottle just for me, since they usually don't stock it.

And speaking of boozy fun....
Another summer must are my Boozy Adult Pops!!! You can read and get the recipe here.

Cotton Candy
It's always been a pretty thing to see. And fascinating to watch put on the stick. I haven't had it in years, most times now my teeth hurt just looking at it. But this year I may have to break down and try a little piece for shits and giggles. But in summers of youth, it was a staple of mine at the beach and carnvials.

Salt Water Taffy
When I was young and we went to the beach, my grandmother and I would go off, play skeet ball and then go for some salt water taffy. She loved it. While it did practically take her dentures out, she still braved it and ate it. While P-town is famous for it's lovely, award winning fudge shops, it's when I go to Rehomo Beach that I get the Taffy at the lovely Dolles. I never get a whole box anymore, but I do  get myself a little sample bag of their flavors. Brings back such find memories.

Lightening Bugs
I captured this little fellow on the porch one afternoon. I later moved him to a Hosta leaf, in fear someone would step on him. Nothing says mid summer night like lightening bugs. I feel like they are very brief around these parts. But when they do come out, it's magical to watch them light up the night since it's so dark where I live. I can remember running around with neighbor kids capturing them. My father bought me one of those containers you could put them in, but with a plastic leaf in them and holes for air, but the poor things always died. It also reminds me of the first time I was outraged when kids would kill  a living thing just because. They would crush them and then smear the glowing liquid across the pavement. It's also the first time I knocked a boy on his ass for doing it.

Carousel
This year, when I head to the beach I have told myself I'm going to take a carousel ride. Another good memory from childhood. In the summer my mother would often take me on afternoons to Williams Grove Park, which is now long gone, which had a few amusements rides and a picnic area. We'd have lunch there, then she and I would take a spin on the carrousel.. I used to love all the lights, the carnival music playing, the up and down motion, and the different animals you could ride... the big decision was always what animals would have the honor to be ridden. It was my grandmother who would always take me to one at the beach.

Divinity
Divinity is one of those old school candies. Both of my grandmothers and my aunts all had a candy dish filled with jujube divinity in the summer. I hadn't had it in years, till I saw it in the Vermont Country Store catalog this summer. As one can see from above, I rectified that. Soooooo damn good. And I dare anyone to stop at one piece.

Chicken Corn Soup
I'm not a huge soup eater in the summer, but one tradition my family had every year was my grandmother's Corn Soup picnic. Tons of family and friends members of her church came far and wide for her famous Chicken Corn Soup. Deep chicken and sweet corn flavors make this soup memorable. And her corn always came from a local farm market called Strites Orchid in Harrisburg. While me and my mother have her recipe, I think we made it once in the 22 years since my grandmother's  passing. But the smell, and taste and all the good times at those picnics bring about some great summer memories.

Square cuts
Of course...no summer is complete without my square cuts and swim trunks. I may be upwards of about 40 now. It's hard to select just one print. And they make packing light. A few of these and tees in a brown bag and off one goes!!!

What's your summer pleasure or things you miss?

And you've featured many of my favorite summer things. Well, all except for cotton candy. You're right. Just looking at it makes my teeth hurt. But I love salt water taffy.

  3. Ah, ma chere, summer is indeed so delicious, with men scantidly clad walking about the streets displaying their pectorals and abdominals for all to oooh and ahh over. My man Clive enjoys his calisthenics exercising out on the lawn, letting the sun bronze his Mediterranean skin to a golden shade of sandalwood while his sweat glistens on his skin. He’s always urging me to wrestle with him on the lawn, covered in olive oil, but I love to keep in waiting in suspense. The chase is more interesting than the pursuit, no? Anyway, your portraits remind me of a friend of mine, Rico, a Latin man who whispered his name in my ear every time we wrestled in my boudoir. Yes, I would exclaim, “Mmm, que rico." And he would say, “Yess, that is my name!” And I would have to correct him, “No, I mean, que rico!” And he’d agree, “Yes, I’m Rico!” And I would say, “Que, rico!” I’m sure there was something lost in translation. He was not very bright in the end.

    1. Conde, "The chase is more interesting than the pursuit, no?" I have to agree again. It's the equivalent I believe of being edged. Sometimes the edging is far better and more enjoyable than the big fireworks going off. And as far as Rico, we just hope there was a happy ending? Of some sort.

  8. Mistress dear, you have named many of the things from my youth that even way back then we did. I used to love taffy and the merry go round ride at the shore. Is it me or does taffy even taste better when you eat it there? And PIMMS!!!!!! By far our favorite afternoon drink of choice. But the big take me back moment was the Divinity! My goodness, I hadn't even seen that in years! But I remember it was so damn good. Thanks for letting us know where you found it. As usual you are looking very healthy and svelte as usual. If my son was gay, I d have you two hooked up right quick. Lovely post.

  9. I too loved this summertime post. I think slat water taffy is a huge one for me, and homemade churned ice cream.

Now is it possible to get that last photo of you in an 8x10 to frame. I'm sorry, but you look downright hot in it!!!!

  11. I've never seen a firefly before! My father used to talk about them whenever he talked about growing up in Kansas City, MO, and sleeping in the park on hot summer nights. That thing sure is pretty. It looks like a hair clip.
Between 1974 and 1975 (or high school graduation and marriage) I worked at an amusement park on Mission Beach in San Diego. Belmont Park. It's now more of a mall with the antique roller coaster still standing. I was ramp girl for a couple of rides until they moved me to running the merry-go-round. That was so much fun. I miss being able to get to the beach in about fifteen to twenty minutes from my home. Boogie boarding with my sisters while our husbands stayed home. Belmont Park used to have candy apples and if we begged enough my father would shell out money for us to have one. I loved the ones covered in hard cinnamon candy. I can't find these anymore. Wow, this post brought back a lot of fun summer memories! Now, we camp or I stay holed up in the house. I could mainline cotton candy!

    1. Shall I collect a few fireflies for you to wear as hairclips Duchess? They'd be smashing with your coiffure, especially when they light up! Cool, I never knew you worked rides at an amusements. Now your still pushing buttons and making things go up and down and around...your bed....which could be a good thing oh la la!!!!!!

    2. Candy apples!!! I had forgotten about those! I love them too and we still have them at beach point on the boardwalks. In the fall we always went for the caramel covered ones then.

Maddie certainly brought about some wonderful memories didn't she?

Oh my goodness...Chicken Corn Soup! I used to love that PA Dutch soup in the summer. And just viewing you and your sexy legs and nether regions is a summer delight for me!!!!

I’m lucky enough to live a short drive from the coast – something which still feels like a bit of a novelty after growing up inland. I like to get a breath of sea air whenever possible; even a short evening stroll along the pier or an hour sitting on the rocks watching the waves roll in can help soothe away daily stresses. It's my favorite summer treat by far.

  13. Oh...my goodness I loved this post too. Im still learning things about you creature. I HAVE HAD divinity AND IT IS DIVINE! Don't get me started on the Pimm's either. That was all I drank in England one summer for a trip, and have been hooked on them since in the summer months. They are refreshing.

I too must agree you are quite a breath stealer.

The beach was never a summer thing for me since I'm on the west coast, but slat water taffy is by far better on the east coast. I love chicken and corn, so I bet I would love that soup. 19. What another lovely installment Mistress. I remember well many of these things. The Divinity does look delicious. The ones in the candy bowl, not your swim trunks, though that is just as mouth watering. For me packing up a basket and heading off for an impromptu after-work, or weekend picnic is a real treat – the perfect antidote to a day spent hunched in front of a screen, or trapped in air conditioning.

  23. I was surprised skinny dip wasn't one your list. Water is a huge thing for me in the summers. There’s something enchanting about swimming outdoors: plunging into a lake, wallowing under a waterfall, or dipping your toes into a crystal-clear river, and getting naked in a pool.

Besides, we have perfect beach weather for a good many months of the year. August is the busiest month. Salt water taffy! Heading toConey Island in September. Im buying myself a box.
