GRANDE DAME

Seems most people are either in the Mathu Anderson camp or the Conchita Wusrt camp. Both men in drag are bearded. I myself have always been in the Mathu camp. His style is beyond flawless, elegant, and artistic and his wiggery is to die for.

If your not familiar with him, I guarantee you know his work. He is the creative artist who makes' RuPaul come together. From Ru's fashion, make up and wigs, it's all Mathu.  Mathu Andersen has had a long and accomplished career as a makeup artist. His star-studded, A-list clientele stars and other drag queens,  and includes many, but first and fore most is the world’s most famous drag queen, RuPaul, with whom he collaborated on projects ranging from the music video “Supermodel” to  RuPaul’s Drag Race. A self-described perfectionist, Andersen is known for his creative edge and the meticulousness of his work, which has distinguished him in a highly competitive field. But in January 2012, Andersen, feeling “a bit fed up” with the demands of “making other people’s dreams and visions happen,” took a moment to snap a selfie on his iPhone: a soulful self-portrait that showcased a blue backdrop and his Walt Whitman-worthy beard.

Nearly three years, 800 posts, and 81,000 followers later, the Australian-born artist is anything but bewildered by Instagram. If his upcoming exhibition at World of Wonder is any indicator, Andersen has elevated the selfie to an art form. His photographs, primarily self-portraits that feature hundreds of wigs and makeup styles, not only provide insight into one of the creative minds behind RuPaul's success, they showcase an artist who can break gender barriers with the stroke of an eyeliner pen, the snap of an iPhone camera, and of course, that beard. "Mathu's self-portraits take the selfie to new heights. They crash through the vanity of social media to create works that challenge our idea of beauty. And if you can look pass the beard, his make up is downright flawless!!!

  2. Just how fabulous can one look with a beard? I'd say this talented person is the answer. How fun would he have been on American Horror Story as the bearded lady!!!! I loved Kathy Bates, but Mathu would have really brought the GLAM!

  6. Darling Maddie,

We both need a session with Mathu in order to pick up tips. And,how handy it is that he will be able to advise on everything.....make up, wigs, beards, couture gowns, nail varnish......this man is clearly a living, breathing encyclopaedia on how to look good.

    1. A living encyclopedia may not be a bad thing to have around. I have always said that drag queens have way to much fashion sense and know how for one sex.

  14. Nice post.

I'll take some heat for this, most likely, but I hope the beard craze fades quickly. Too many men can't properly pull off the look, yet there they are...

    1. Whkattk, I have to agree. Very few guys look right with the beard look. I think the five o clock shadow look is far more sexy myself.
