An Unusual Lunch...With Peacocks

It seems the Mistress is always doing or interested in something odd and out of the ordinary. So today one of my co-workers took the Mistress up the road to a peacock farm and preserve for lunch. It is set in a park like setting and is filled with peacocks everywhere. Since we get a hour for lunch, I thought what the heck. The Mistress's favorite animal is the peacock. I have always loved them. And it's not because it has cock in it's name or because it's a bird, both of which I like! I just think they are so beautiful, graceful and neat to watch. And peacock feathers are a symbol of Hera in Greek mythology another of my favorite interests. The Mistress always garnishes a gift with a peacock feather when giving a gift! It has become my trademark. And someday, the Mistress plans on having a peacock as a pet! My co-worker who I went with has a friend who showed us around and gave us some facts I can say I never knew. Females are known as peahens and are not as colorful as the males, which are known as peacocks. Peacocks are part of the pheasant family of birds and usually have a life span of about 15 years in the wild and longer in captivity. They live in the open forest, bushland and even in the rain forests. I have seen some wild peacocks around New Hope on many occasions when going to work and had no idea they could love in these parts, but the lady at the preserve said they can, so long as their is plenty of insects, and vegetation. The other thing I learned today is the the females hang together in what they call a party. When mating begins, the males gather a harem of female peahens, who lay between 3 to 10 eggs. And lastly I learned they are quiet testy fowl and don't mix well with other domestic birds. There is nothing worst than a uncooperative cock, so I guess when I get one, I have to work with it and tame it! So quite an unusual lunch, but a enjoyable one, despite the damn humidity!

  1. They are beautiful birds, but they can have the most unfortunate tempers. Be careful around them...

  3. The Engineer grew up in farm country at the edge of a tiny town and surrounded by wheat fields. One of their neighbors had peacocks. The coyotes lusted after those birds but never caught one.

  4. Thats pretty neat! They are pretty cool birds. The people of the one house I do landscaping for have three of them, and they can be mean! And by your post, so you can handle a un-cooperavative cock? I mean bird? LOL!

  5. Their cry is eerie. I say "cry" because it's more like that than anything else. They are really pretty.

  6. They are lovely, but mean.
Although I am 25+ year vegetarian...I think the males would make a fine hat for the Mistress.
