The Kenya trip I knew was going to be a memorable and spectacular one. The highlight of the trip was the Sheldrick Trust I had longed to go see, what with my love of elephants and years of making charitable donations. But let's be honest, this trip had many highlights and experiences I may never experience again or forget. Another leg of our trip took us to Giraffe Manor. You've likely seen photos or a special of this place. Yes...it is THAT hotel...where giraffes will peak their heads in your windows. or even crane their necks through the windows. I can honestly say it was a very special moment and experience that has been at the top of my bucket list for over a decade. The Giraffe Manor was built in 1932 and was modeled after a Scottish hunting lodge. The giraffes weren't introduced until the 1970's. This is when the owners, Jock and Betty Melville, first adopted an orphaned endangered Rothchild's giraffe, they called Daisy. At the time, there were only about 130 of them left. Thanks to them and the help of others there are now well over 300 of these giraffes and counting, and the property has about 10-20 regular giraffe visitors. And they roam freely on the 15 acres at will. They are gentle giants...and very curious and seem so calm and gracefully for their size. We spent three days and two nights here, taking in these creatures, the swell and attentive staff, the picturesque grounds and other guest from all over the globe. The Manor also take care of your transportation to and from the manor. They picked us up at our other hotel outside of Nairobi. Upon getting to the manor, refreshing drinks awaited, and our luggage taken to our rooms. While the service and attention were unparalleled, the giraffes alone were by far the most magical part...and something I won't soon forget. I think the pictures alone speak to the amazement though. I knew they were big, but you take for granted just how big till your so close to them.

GIRAFFES OF THE MANOR
Our first morning surprise!!!!!!!!!
The stay was worth every penny. I'd say this was second to the Orient Express to Vienna trip in price. But boy, if I never go anywhere again...this trip gave me memories for a lifetime. If anyone is interested in info or prices feel free to email me. I will be giving Warbucks whatever he wants, even though this was our Christmas together.
And just listen to those birds!

I've heard of Giraffe Manor -- and how ultra fabulous that you got to stay there! Your photos and videos are spexracular, especially your first photo. There's certainly no privacy with those Peeping Toms around but who cares? What an experience!
ReplyDelete"Spexracular"? WTF am I drinking? Someone slipped a mickey in my tea!
DeleteI feel sorry for them if they peered in our windows!
DeleteOH.MY.GOD!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!! I would have no words. They are simply amazing...like very big dogs. The place looks simply spectacular. I cant even comprehend waking up and seeing giraffes outside the window!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo words i say can do justice for my time there.
Deleteyour becoming a modern day tippi hendron. and ill say it again....you came back??????
ReplyDeleteWho was going to feed the houseboys?
DeleteWhat an amazing experience! Jx
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy they managed to bring up the population! It makes me extra sad when I hear an animal is endangered or extinct. Really. Humans are the worst.
This trip is fabulous, Mads.
XOXO
One of my best...memorable and costly yet.....and damn worth every penny.
DeleteWOW! What a spectacular place, sweetpea. I can't even imagine sitting having breakfast and seeing that huge head pop up! (Double entendre not intended) ANYWAY, you're right, seeing all of that just once is a lifelong memory. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI had to pinch myself it seemed every hour to make sure giraffes were roaming around freely!
DeleteOh my god, Maddie! I would have been in hog heaven... well, giraffe heaven. What an amazing experience! Thanks for sharing the spectacular photos!
ReplyDeleteWarthog heaven!!! There were many of them around too, and the piglets were actually very comical!!!!!
DeleteThank you for sharing this!!!! The hubby SOOOO wants to do this, so I will be emailing you on specifics. This is simply incredible. I dare say mind blowing. They seem so at ease. The planet could use far more people like you and the owners of this place to conserve and protect these animals. This post made me whole day!
ReplyDeleteYou guys both enjoy being outside, so I think you'd two enjoy this trip. I say GO!
DeleteThe idea of a giraffe head poking through the window of my breakfast nook makes me so happy! What an amazing trip!
ReplyDeleteA memory I don't think I'll ever forget Bob.
DeleteI pity the poor giraffes if they looked in your room to early and saw what you and Warbucks were up too. What a commendable place!!!! I had happy tears for you looking at the pictures. I know this was a life long dream. I can't imagine the price tag.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'll be sucking Warbucks off morning noon and night...whenever he basically wants me too! LMAO!!!!!!!
DeleteKUDOS to you for going to Africa. I don't know I'd have the balls too. But I really, really would love to see this all this. I have done some research on African trips. Definitely a steep price, but for a once in a lifetime experience like that, it makes sense to take the plunge. Looks like you guys had an awesome time! This world is a big place to just see cities all the time. I loved your photos.
ReplyDeleteIt was steep, but half the money from our stay at Giraffe Manor goes into the programs there with the giraffes.
DeleteHow magical. Don't you just find yourself pinching yourself because how can all these wonderful things be real? Thank you for sharing. Had no idea such a place existed. And thanks for the great photos and vids. Surreal. And yet, very real! Kizzes.
ReplyDeleteI did have to pinch myself several times!!!
DeleteThey are simply amazing animals.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! For sharing this! How mind blowing. This sounds like the most amazing experience, and I would totally have no issue forking over the money for something like this. I mean, how many people can really say they interacted with Giraffes in Africa? And through you I got involved and also I love the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (I donate to them and follow their Instagram) and loved seeing your post from your time there as well. I hope I will make it there before I go 6ft under. Gentle giants indeed. Oh how I loved this.
ReplyDeleteIf your kids offer to take you, I say go Agnes!!!!! It is truly amazing.
DeleteI should tell them to come read your blog as a hint. HA HA ! I think they should grant this old bag one last big trip before I get too decrepit.
DeleteWhat a unique and tailored vacation. You pick the best spot to go I swear. Wow this looks amazing! Looks totally worth the cost, definitely going on my list! So cool Mistress. I love giraffes. The videos are so fun to see! They are something!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I would love to stay there sometime! This is so amazing to see. I can imagine Africa was a pricey trip for sure, but how can you not go? You're the only person I know to ever go to Africa. But it does seem like it would be an experience beyond measure. I'm going back to look at the pictures again.
ReplyDeleteI really didn't mind the price after I learned that almost half the money from guest stays goes into the preserving of the giraffes and foundation. All the more reason to stay there.
DeleteAll the more reason to go and stay there.
DeleteSuch majestic animals!
ReplyDeleteLucky you.
ReplyDeleteWonderful memorie for you. How fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble with my google sign in. It will say I'm anonymous but I'm not! It's Christina. Xx
I don't know about everywhere we went, but Im guessing you and the hubby would love Giraffe Manor.
DeleteI guarantee that you will never forget your trip to Africa, in fact you will find that Africa will keep calling you back! My memories are fading a little, old age but I remember zebras coming up to us while we were sitting by the pool one day and an elephant walking through the lobby of a hotel but have forgotten on which trip. Your photos are outstanding. Gigi
ReplyDeleteGigi...I am so glad I went after second guessing myself and then having to rebook twice. I don't think I'll ever forget this trip...much like the ones to Budapest and the Orient Express to Vienna.
DeleteHi! This is fabulous!!!!! I have been reading your post but might have missed some of them from Kenya. Where can I find a copy of your Africa itinerary? It seems like it was an awesome trip.
ReplyDeleteHi and Welcome Annabelle! Feel free to email me at mistressborghese@yahoo.com. I can give you more info and what we did the whole trip and who to contact.
DeleteExcellent post!!!!! You got some great pictures and video. So glad you got to finally do your dream trip. I can tell you that you can’t put a price tag on a trip of a lifetime. When I visited Giraffe Manor in 2004, I paid much less than today’s rates and had a single room. Spent 5 magnificent days with these glorious creatures. I was the last guest before rainy season and had the whole place to myself for 3 days. I felt like and was treated like a queen. Someday when the unrest in the world settles down, I definitely want to return there. Staff was beyond fantastic, tried food I had never had(delicious), and cried when I left My giraffe that carries my name. Make your dream come true and you’ll come home with more insight that will stay with you for years to come. Thanks for sharing Mistress.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds amazing!!!!! The whole place plus all those giraffes?!?!?!?!
DeleteReading all this makes me want to go! I so NEED to renew my passport This should be tip top of the any bucket list.I would go in a heartbeat to live the whole experience. The pictures , the giraffes and the places itself looks so amazing. Even the giraffes seem like hams!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Mistress!!!! I bet you were i heaven!!!! First Elephants then this?!?!?! I'd love to go see this. A 91-year old family friend and world traveler told me a week ago that her most outstanding travel memory of anywhere she has been, was her visit to Africa and Giraffe Manor (only one giraffe at the time…Daisy Rothschild) . I shared your blog with her, and she was over-the-top impressed. So I must show here this post too. This is so beautiful and made me day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely compliment! I'm so tickled she enjoyed her visit. I know I was very impressed with this trip.
DeleteJaw dropping.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! They're such beautiful creatures.
ReplyDeleteGentle giants is a description that suits giraffes from head to toe - those big spaniel eyes help.
ReplyDeleteThey were so gentle. Even if they came up to you, we were told to let them approach and touch us first before just reaching to touch them. There eyes are so sweet and sincere and trusting...and those eye lashes!!!!!!
DeleteThat is incredible! It also drives home the point why taking two hours on Monday to get my passport application submitted was worth it.
ReplyDeleteGood!!!! Get ready to have your eyes and mind awakened.
DeleteReally wonderful! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI hope Sassybear sees this!
ReplyDeleteExcellent!!!!!! I have seen this place before and wondered about it. I'm too chicken shit to go to Africa...but now I want to in the worst way. What a dream come true! Your pictures are gorgeous. This looks like such a once in a lifetime experience! And that giraffe haed right in front of you at the table?!?! What a delightful moment. Another post I had read elsewhere about Giraffe Manor did not make me think it was really worth the price, but this post totally changed my mind! And your pictures.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! LOVE!!!!! Liek you I so enjoy elephants and giraffes. Every picture made me more and more happy. Love the honest breakdown. I’d definitely splurge on this! One day. I've been dying to go to Africa.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say this looks like one of the coolest places in the world!!!! And love that your not inhibited to go anywhere. This is so cool.
ReplyDeleteI like to travel, but when I started traveling, I wanted to go to more obscure places first.
DeleteThis brings tears of joy to my eyes. LOVE that you did this. I love these magnificent, beautiful creatures. I learned about the awesome place on a BBC show. This place is now on my bucket list after reading this post.
ReplyDeleteI've always known that giraffes are huge animals, but until I saw one walking by that outdoor patio set, I couldn't believe my eyes! You are soooooo LUCKY to have experienced Giraffe Manor -- thanks for sharing, Maddie!!!!
ReplyDeleteI almost cried when we left. Maybe I should move to Africa?
DeleteOh no, there are wonderful places to visit in Africa, but it's far too dangerous to live there! Besides, Maddie, I see you more as a Parisian, with a fantastic, tastefully remodelled historic apartment in the best quarter, possibly with a cute poodle named Fifi. Think of all the beautiful architecture, Art Nouveau, antiques, sidewalk cafes and fresh baguettes you could enjoy!
DeleteYes...I dare say I enjoy Budapest even more.
DeleteI would be in sheer heaven... What lovely tender animals. Those eyes are like deep pools of satin... Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteJealous does not even come close to the emotions I’m experiencing after reading this post. If I ever get the money, a visit to Giraffe Manor is the single item on my bucket list. I have seen so many pictures and read about it for so long. I’m so glad you got to visit there. Thanks for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteYou minx! What a trip!!!! After such a long wait, I can bet this vacation was much enjoyed. A dream come to true to go to Giraffe Manor. I hear people get hooked on Africa after visiting. I've always been too nervous to go myself.
