Over the weekend, I caught this. Just proves a film does not have to be a full feature theatrical film to be good. I dare say this is the best work and film I saw all year, even over full films. And I adore Miriam Margolyes, who can do no wrong. The film got me in so many emotions for only 20 minutes. Dorothy is a lonely widow whose body is failing her, but her mind is still very sharp. When JJ accidentally kicks his soccer ball into her garden, he upends Dorothy's daily routine and unlikely friendship blossoms, despite being worlds apart, the two come to find they have more in common than they could have imagined. Books and art.

I, too, love Miriam Margolyes. I watch the Graham Norton show every time she's on and have seen her in many films. I hope I get a chance to see this; it sounds lovely.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right: we don't need a 3-hour movie all the times, sometimes, in SOME things, shorter is better. 😉
Click play toots! Its the whole short movie!
DeleteOh, I thought it was just a preview!! Thanks!!!
DeleteAnd now my eyes are all wet.
DeleteWe could all use a Dorothy!
I am too Bob!
DeleteYes, I thought some might think this was just the preview. A treat it's the whole film.

ReplyDeleteOMG! What a wonderful film! It’s a beautiful story of a friendship that spans the ages. Like so many of us, we want to be seen, not just in passing, but for who we are.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
XOXO
The scene of him reading from The Band Played On and watching her reaction melted me.
DeleteLess is more. When the point has been made, the story has been told. Like my buddy's film "Fusion." It's all of 7 minutes, yet is now in the permanent collection at the 9-11 Memorial Museum in NYC.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful short film -- love it! I hope it wins the Oscar!
ReplyDeleteIt's free to stream on YouTube and about as long as an anime episode? I need to see this during lunch today. Thanks for recommending it.
ReplyDeleteJust hit play. The whole movie is in the clip!
DeleteI first became aware of her way back in the 1980s when she, then relatively little known, kept appearing on stage in 'bit parts'. Then, very gradually she started appearing in films, nearly always British ones, until they started snowballing right up to recent years when she's become a formidable presence whenever and wherever she appears. Her fame has come to her later in life than for most 'stars' but she's now got there - and fully deserves the recognition she's at last achieved.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see her anything I did not like. Even in the movie End of Days with Arnold Schwarzenegger. LOL!!! And in life and on interview shows she's so damn funny.
DeleteApparently reports are that when it comes to farting in front of others she's second to only one other (clue, if needed - orange) - and she readily admits it. So maybe it's better to see her on film than live on stage. :-)
DeleteLMAO!!!! Well my friend...farts are funny.
DeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteAnd you read my mind: this was going to be my post tomorrow.
Love it that's free on YouTube. The children need to learn!
XOXO
Whole features never get me like this did. It made me get teary eyed and happy and laugh and mad as hell at the grandson. I'd like to pop him in the mouth.
DeleteThank you for posting this. It was a charmer.
ReplyDeleteCan’t view the version of the video here that you shared. I’m off to bed, but will find it tomorrow. I love Miriam Margolyes. Brilliant actress, hilarious talk show guest. Although I’ve heard her do wrong by putting her foot in her mouth a few times. But that’s OK. She’s human.
ReplyDeleteHell, I put my foot in my mouth several times a week. I go through lots of water to wash it down with. She is a hoot though.
DeleteAs I wipe the tears away, I just want to say "Thank you." I never would have seen this without your post. What a touching film.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! When one gets so many emotions from just a short film, you know it was good. It made my whole weekend when I came across it. Thanks for popping in David.
DeleteTHANK YOU!!!!!!!! OMG, why did this brief FILM make me emotional? Your right, who needs a whole over hours. I adore her personality in the film too. I hope I act like that when Im old.
ReplyDeleteWhat a privilege to have just seen Miriam Margolyes in ''A friend of Dorothy''. It made me laugh, think and cry. And, as my friend Angie would say, ''Bloody Marvellous'' It's an absolutely beautiful short!
ReplyDeleteThis is the type of lady I am becoming, and I have absolutely no regrets. Thanks for showing this.I never even heard of it and I love Miriam.
ReplyDeleteI was excited to see this, so thanks for posting the whole film!
ReplyDeleteAnd the part where she settles in with her tea and crossword, and then the doorbell rings and she says
"OH FUCK", was I the only one to think of Anne Marie?!?!?!?! LMAO!
YES! Your right! That scene had Anne Marie written ALL OVER IT.
DeleteTHAT was good! I recall once on his show Graham Norton said: "if you are not familiar with Miriam Margolyes ...shame on you. He's right.
ReplyDeleteI love her too! She's raw, honest and quick witted. I had no clue about this film. I will watch it.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad has had to go into a nursing home recently as I can't manage his tumour alone. It is millimetres from his carotid artery and when it breeches, he will bleed out. It's been a huge strain. There are a lot of oldies living in the home. They love to tell their stories. It's always sad to think that peoples knowledge and experience dies with them. X
Oh Christina Im so sorry to read all your going through. If we lived closer I could hug you and we could enjoy a cup of tea and commiserate. It is hard to see the old folk in homes. And if they are visited regularly and are active it's alright, but many are get plopped there and then forgotten which is sad. My father ended up in one because he declined so quick and need so much care, but we knew he wouldn't be in very long and last only a week and half. But your right they have stories to tell...if someone will listen. A shame these places are so short staffed too, which doesn't help.
DeleteTea?, Tea? Where's the gin? 😁 Thank you for your kind words, Maddie. He's in the best place for immediate help which he will need if it ruptures. Enjoy every day. It's a short trip from the cradle to the grave. Xx
DeleteOh ok, ok... I could PROBABLY have my arm twisted for a gin........
DeleteI watched "Friend of Dorothy" yesterday and I was in tears! I loved it! Just... a wonderful story!
ReplyDeleteProbably the most powerful film in some time I saw for only 21 minutes.
DeleteThat was a lovely watch.
ReplyDeleteI had the treat to see this when we were traveling a few months ago at Odense Film Festival and got to meet the director. Such an inspiring film, with so much love and care put into it.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun becoming that older sage.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful, have you read her autobiography?
ReplyDeleteWhat a moving film -- laughter through tears is my favourite emotion! Miriam Margolyes is a fantastic actress too. I quite enjoyed her stint on Call The Midwife as Mother Mildred.
ReplyDeleteOne of the funniest things I ever saw her in was an episode of Jam and Jerusalem. She was also excellent on Doc Martin. And agree about her in Call the Midwife too. Let's face it...she excellent in everything.
DeleteMiriam has always rocked!!!
ReplyDeleteShe’s a national foul mouthed treasure
ReplyDeleteI agree! She reminds me so much of our dear Anne Marie. Foul mouth and all.
DeleteBravo !

Oh, je suis totalement d'accord avec toi.
