VANESSA

Grid your loins......

Anyone who has been a regular reader here for years will tell you, I'm obsessed with Vanessa Williams. I dare say she is the most beautiful, stunning woman in entertainment. Anyone who can come back after her Playboy scandal and tell the Miss America Pageant system they can take their crown and shove it, and go on to have one hell of a huge, successful career, is ok in my book. She can do no wrong. Now she is poised to take on the role of the queen of fashion Miranda Priestly in London's West End stage adaption of The Devil Wears Prada, the new musical based on the book and movie, with original score by none other than Elton John, this fall, before it starts to travel. I'd say the role is tailored made for Ms. Williams, from her plum role of the delicious Wilhelmina Slater on one of what was probably one of my favorite shows ever, Ugly Betty. But ohhhh happy day.... she is here tonight with her newest song....LEGS!

Damn girl...work it but don't wreak it.
And honey, if your reading...I'm gonna need that fabu headpiece.

" I'M THE LADY CHABLIS...HEAR ME ROAR"

The Lady Chablis, the transgender performer who became an unlikely celebrity for her role in the 1994 best-seller "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," died today in Savannah. Chablis insisted on playing herself in 1997's "Midnight" movie directed by Clint Eastwood. Her birth name was Benjamin Edward Knox, but she legally changed it to The Lady Chablis around the time of the "Midnight" movie, and was even quoted as saying there'd be no movie, if she couldn't play herself. And Chablis, one of the southern staples, could  dance, lip sync, and emcee... her mother got the name Chablis off a wine bottle! It's a wonder my name wasn't Hendrick!!! She was a breakout star, no doubt about it. Her pure honesty she gave people, she didn't hold her tongue. She told you what she thought.
"If I catch any of you bitches near him, honey, I want you to know, you're gonna have to deal with the Lady Chablis, the Doll, the Grand Empress, and my mother fuckin ice pick. So keep your hands off that one, okay?"
'It's like my mom always used to say, Two tears in the bucket, mother fuck it."
'You better grow some nails honey, because if he's a gynecologist, he's mine."
'Yes, I'm a bitch and proud of it."

"Either he got some good ole stuff, girl, or you're horny as hell."

IN THE MEANTIME....AMANDA LEPORE

Yes dears ones...the Mistress is back and went to work today, GASP.... yeah, that's what I said too, but till I dry out get my bearings back, and start to get caught up with you all...let's enjoy one of my all time favorite muses.....Amanda Lepore. I have always thought she is just fabulous! What's not to love...she is completely over the top, very cartoonish, great style, campy, naughty personality, and channels the old movie blond bombshells of yester year!!! I had the opportunity to meet her two years ago when she came to New Hope for a night of cabernet , in which she sang some of her ditties. I'm here to tell you she is also one sweet diva, and so interesting to talk to, and anyone who can transition with such finesse, and have a lovely impressive rack like her....well, that's grace. Her newest song Turn Me Over, sums up my life. Is it any wonder I love her? I can only hope my trip to Buenos Aires next summer will be as fun as her trip to Brazil, and that I'll be in just as good of hands.......

I'll be back shorty love bugs.......

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Just two shorts months ago I posted about the dear Holly Woodlawn, who was in failing health. Well her bright light went out yesterday. Holly Woodlawn, who was a transgender actress rose to fame in the early 1970s through her work with Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey, died on Sunday in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer. She was 69. Born Haroldo Danhakl in Puerto Rico, Woodlawn grew up in Miami before running away from home at 15 to hitchhike to New York City. Her story famously inspired the first verse of Lou Reed's 1972 "Walk on the Wild Side" After spending years in poverty in New York, Woodlawn met Andy Warhol, the man who would make her one of his "superstars," in 1968. By 1970, she starred in Paul Morrissey's Warhol-supported Trash, giving a performance thrilling enough to inspire George Cukor to launch a write-in Oscar campaign on her behalf, though neither an award nor a nomination materialized. But what another great pioneer for the transgendered.

“The boys at the baths loved me. Of course, they were all drunk and high and would've loved a French poodle barking out "Jingle Bells"!”

"I was like a low life in high heels."

“I would see these films starring Maria Felix, Lola Flores she was my very favorite. My uncle was the one that opened my eyes to glamour.”

“ Make a statement.....lots of chiffon and a fan,”

Good sweetheart......

GRANDE DAME......

I'll bet you have never seen the sights of the fabulous Temple Drake!
She has been pleasing the crowds for some time, and has had quite the pampered life.... and brings her social hilarity and hostess skills to all.Temple's strength comes from a good Southern upbringing and many years of fashionable living, world travel, and general good looks. Where else can you find this much beauty? The hair styles alone.........
One of my fashion inspirations.

I WAS MADLY IN LOVE WITH LIFE

Renaissance woman Hedy Lamarr could not be accused of living a dull life. Even before fleeing her loveless marriage to a Nazi arms dealer to become a Hollywood star. She is remembered for her beauty on the silver screen, but the Hollywood actor spent her nights inventing a weapons communication system that was a precursor to wireless technologies including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. To me she was the most beautiful woman to ever grace the screen!  She still leaves me breathless, and I'm a gay man!!!! She would have been 101 today. Us Scorpios have to stick together, I say.

"Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid"

"Men are most virile and most attractive between the ages of 35 and 55. Under 35 a man has too much to learn, and I don't have time to teach him."

"Lawyers know how to take isolated complaints in a divorce case and build them into one big one."

"I can excuse everything but boredom. Boring people don't have to stay that way."

“American men, as a group, seem to be interested in only two things, money and breasts. It seems a very narrow outlook.”

“I don’t fear death because I don’t fear anything I don’t understand. When I start to think about it, I order a massage and it goes away"

“I was madly in love with life.”

LEGEND OF CARMEN MIRANDA

"Look at me and tell me if I don’t have Brazil in every curve of my body."

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite Hollywood legends and icons...Carmen Miranda, who I think is under appreciated. Happy Birthday Carmen!!! I only wish AMC, OR TMC, would play a day of her movies for us. She brought such a energy to the screen and sure made an entrance.

If you don't recognize her by her name, you'll definitely recognize her by her iconic image: the lady in fruit hat. Always a lover of fashion and theatre, Carmen herself was named after Bizet's opera, Carmen. Her father's passion for opera inspired her to sing and dance as a little girl and eventually put her talent to use in other ways. Originally being from Portugal, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, singing at festivals and maintaining a job to help with her sister's medical bills. When she wasn't working on hats, a talent she discovered while working at a boutique, she was auditioning on radio shows and creating her own image to stand out from her competition.

It wasn't often you saw pictures without her usual garb...she had fabulous , glamorous hair.

Her competition, however, grew weaker and weaker as she grew more famous and was given a contract in 1929, becoming the first contract singer in Brazil's radio industry. With this exposure, she traveled to other cities to perform as a samba singer and made her screen debut on A Voz Do Carnaval, Alô, Alô Brasil and the 1935 film, Estudantes. Her biggest opportunity came when an American theatre operator saw her perform and made a contract with her to make an American stage debut in Streets of Paris. She spoke a total of four words yet became a huge sensation, so much so that President Roosevelt formally introduced her to the American public as a way to welcome her to the U.S.

From this welcoming, Carmen shared her refreshing image with Hollywood and Broadway, bringing tropical-chic to the scene. With her new contracts, she was able to produce some of her best work in That Night at Rio, Week-End in Havana, The Gang's All Here and Copacabana. Although she became the highest paid woman in the U.S. by 1945, she continued to make the costumes she appeared in, making them more and more extravagant each time. Her iconic platform heels became taller ,to hide the fact that she was only five feet tall, and designers like Ferragamo created custom designs just for her. Her flamboyant floral, fruity headdresses, turbans and bold accessories became her signature look, never to be forgotten. Although she passed away in 1955 at the age of 46, her image lives on through many artistic outlets today.

It wasn't long ago for a party yours truly did my own ode to Carmen......

WHERE ART THOU, CYNTHIA

While most of my regulars readers may know, I am a Visual Stylist for a living at a well known iconic department store. You know, the one you makes the store, windows, and the like look all pretty, creative, and compelling, for you, to spend your money!!!!! I also do a lot of other things in addition. One of the things I do is dress all the Ready To Wear mannequins, in the latest fashions, and trends, you didn't know you had to have. We on the visual team of course have names for all the mannequins. All swank looking of course, all size 4's, flawless skin, silky hair, and have a cat like stance to their runway poses. Dominique. Ming. Artemis. Louisa. Margatha. But none of them in our store are as famous as one  mannequin that ever was. Cynthia.

In 1932 the artist Lester Gaba, not unlike Andrew McCarthy's character in the 1987 classic Mannequin, created Cynthia, a mannequin for Saks Fifth Avenue. Cynthia was "a 100-pound model who had realistic imperfections like freckles, pigeon toes, and even different sized feet." Five years later, Gaba posed with Cynthia around New York City for a LIFE magazine spread which supposedly launched the career of an up-and-coming starlet and made Cynthia a household name overnight. No, I kid you not.... really. She was a legit A-lister, complete with her own television talk show, roles in movies, and a box seat subscription to the Metropolitan Opera House.

Only years before Gaba came on the scene, mannequins were often still ponderously heavy, relatively unrealistic creations of wax. They melted in the summer heat, and even sometimes bore frightening rictus grins of real human teeth. Upper-class women preferred to see how their clothes looked by having them modeled on young, human women. Gaba was one of a wave of pioneers making modern mannequins that combined style with realism — his so-called “Gaba Girls.”
Gaba boasted that his mannequins were nearly indistinguishable from well-dressed human women, and pointed out that his creations had charming imperfections just as real women did. But the undisputed magnum opus of Gaba’s career came in the form of a 5′ 6″, 100-pound doll he dubbed Cynthia. He brought her with him to nightclubs and social events. She became something of a New York nightlife fixture. Meanwhile, the country’s finest stores lavished Cynthia with attention — and free gifts of dresses, shoes, furs and jewelry. Saks Fifth Avenue even issued her a credit card. Once she achieved a certain level of fame, gossip columnists began writing about Cynthia as if she were a living, breathing socialite. When partygoers tried to engage the mannequin in conversation, Gaba begged off by claiming she was suffering from a touch of laryngitis.

She even was known to light up.......

Here she is head of the table for Sunday brunch at the Park Avenue apartment of novelist Thyra Samter Winslow.

As one can see, she even had her own closet......

But, as with the fame that sometimes descends on flesh-and-blood humans, Cynthia’s was not to last. Her time in the spotlight proved fleeting, and the next decade saw her begin to fade from public view. In 1942, Gaba was inducted into the army. He sent Cynthia to stay with his mother in Missouri. Though the rest of the nation had moved on to other fads, Gaba insisted that Cynthia be treated like a celebrity, and instructed his mother to take the mannequin to the beauty parlor regularly. Years later, once Gaba returned, sadly, Cynthia died when she slipped from a chair in a beauty salon and shattered, the press even reported on her death. She was reconstructed and tried to have a comeback much later, in the 1950s, but the appeal was gone and she was stored up in a box.

She was known to even flash the camera whilst awaiting adjustments.

Touring NYC in a sky bus, seeing the sights.......

Ultimately, she remained an enigma to the man who had lavished so much of his talent and his time on her. Years later Gaba admitted to the New York Times‘ Gay Talese that, in the end, “Cynthia never made any sense.”  Cynthia's current whereabouts are a mystery. Creepy!
