IRIS & PEONY

It has been quite a rewarding spring this far in the garden at the Casa du Borghese. This week's stars of the show, and I suspect next week's, will be the peony and irises! Blooming in all their glory. I have already cut three vases of peony for the indoors, with at least another 80 buds ready to open.

And here's a overview video of the back garden...as of this morning. Forgive my video skills, I never said I was a Chi Chi LaRue with the camera, or maybe it was because of what's at the end of the video.

  2. Thank you, finding serenity and beauty in our gardens is more important now than ever. It's a good mind cleanser needed to clear out the awful happenings in our world and give us some hope for the future. And that libation on the table near the end can't hurt.

  3. Beautiful Maddie! I was humming the theme from Jaws while watching the video. My back yard consists of the living, the mostly dead and the ghosts of plants no longer with us. The purple thumb strikes again!

  6. Mistress...it is all so glorious! Your garden is stunning this spring. I too love peonies, and they actually do well here on the shoreline. I was tickle by the video...so many stars of the show as you say. And Milleson is right, your engaged in news, but good to have an outlet to put energies into and forget about the news for short time. Thanks for this post tonight, Maddie.

  8. Your garden is wonderful! You certainly have green fingers. I have neither Paeonies or Irises in my garden. How have I allowed that to happen?😁
Still very cool here with a persistent easterly wind. Hopefully the coming week will be a bit warmer and less windy. X

  14. My peonies are rather limp this year, I suspect Howie's been peeing on them.

    1. Give them so TLC and handle them well...that usually gets things rigid again.

  16. Your garden looks lovely. Most of my roses are out, bat my Paul's Himalayan musk which has thousands of buds waiting to burst open. Sadly it is not a repeat flowerer and its glorious display is over in a couple of weeks.

    1. My roses filled in nice, as I thought I may have loss a few bushes over the winter....but they all came back and have like you said oodles of buds!

  17. How lovely to see your garden greening up again, Maddie -- those peonies and irises are gorgeous! All that's missing from your video is your voice narrating a la Attenborough!

    1. I thought about it, but I didn't know if I'd be able to hold the camera Focus walk and talk all the same time. After all I did have two G & T's. So it might have sound slurred.

  18. Irises and peonies are both such magnificent blooms, and both over so quickly! The garden tour just had to feature something else with florals (gin), didn't it? Jx

    1. Well, Hendricks does include botanicals after all. I agree with the flowers. While peonies will last about a week cut in a base, Iris on the other hand last about 3 days in a vase if you're lucky, which is why I don't even clip any to bring in anymore. Unfortunately, all my "root beer" iris all died out for some reason...they were a lovely brown color and smelled oddly a faint whiff of root beer.
