AT THE RITZ....

...MEANWHILE....

This hummingboid got good taste!

Sometimes a company and humans can surprise me and not very often. This story was too nice to not share. At the Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage, an extraordinary moment unfolds when a tiny hummingboid picked an unexpected place to build its little nest-right on a door handle in the main entrance of doors. Rather than move it or knock it down, the Ritz chose a different path; they closed off the entire front set of entrance doors, across the front on the main side of the building and redirected guests into a secondary door on the side, putting the bird and it's two young, safety above the convenience of getting in the building. A great story and it spread fast, capturing attention as a rare example of a luxury brand choosing compassion and respect for nature even at the cost of disrupting daily operations and people bitching about walking the whole way around to use the secondary door. A billion-dollar a year hotel...doing right by a creature small enough to fit in the hand of a baby. I have read stories of other places knocking nest down once built, or even after eggs are in it...but this is nice to read...

  1. Maddie, you know of my love for birds, especially the crows, but these tiny creatures are worthy of our trust and protection. This is an exemplary tale of love for something other than self. A tear streaks down my cheek.

    1. It was a refreshing story to read for once where the poor creatures weren't be terrorized and discarded because they pose a inconvenience. We have to remember we SHARE this plant.

  7. Love this! Kudos to the Ritz Carlton managers for their compassion and decency. Last spring, one of our local restaurants fenced off a Canada Goose and her nest she'd decided to build in a planter adjacent to their door. Mama Cobra Chickens are VERY territorial and can cause nasty injuries to interlopers, but this one laid her eggs and when the babies were ready, the family moved on!

    1. My mother once had a duck, yes...a duck take up residence and nest in one of her window boxes once. 4 ducklings hatched.

    1. And when you see the picture, the whole nest and bird is only as big as the circular key lock!!! And let's face it, the bird also has a look that says; don't trifle with me.

Nature does not give a literal flying fuck about the bougie among us.

    1. The other reason I find this odd, is because hummingbirds can be very shy and skittish. It's unusual they would build a nest in such a high traffic flow area. I guess the bird had its mind made up ....that where she wanted the nest and that was it!

  12. How wonderful!
We are sooooo lucky this year. Blue tits are nesting right next to our window. The parents are back and forth all day long. You should hear the noise when one of the parents goes in!
We also have a blackbird nesting in our allotment shed. Not sure how many chicks but we have seen two hopping around on the floor. We have chosen not to go in the shed until they fledge so some jobs are on hold. We are happy to wait. We feel so privileged.

    1. There's nothing like when birds build a nest and a bush close to the house windows. You can watch them go from this building to lay in the eggs to see in the hatchlings and then leaving it's exciting isn't it?

  15. They always notorious for choosing the most precarious places for nest. I had one build a nest on my sketchy ass wind chime. Which is meant to blow all over the place. One night there was a windstorm and I had heard that you don’t touch the nest because it’s not good. But I could let them get blown to hell. So I took a weight and anchored it to the bottom of the wind chime being careful not to touch the nest. The weight sat on the ground attached with wire They made it through the night. And I got two watch the two smallest of baby’s fly away eventually. The one flew away first and the other guy just sat there forever. But no sign of mom. Then one day I saw it fly to the nearest fence and the Mom came down out of the tree to greet it. She was watching the whole time.
