PLAINCLOTHES

With two nice weekends in the books getting caught up at home, I also am getting caught up with some flicks I wanted to see. So far three, Plainclothes, Death of a Unicorn, and The Ugly Stepsister. All wonderful watches, the last a very disturbing and horrific take on Cinderella. But his post is my take on the surprisingly wonderful film, Plainclothes, one I was shocked I didn't hear more about. Fellow blogger Dave also mentioned it and seemed to enjoy it too. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival of January in 2025. and got one award and many accolades. Having just watched the movie, it's easy to see why. The cast, especially the two leads, is fantastic, bringing an emotional depth to a difficult story. Leading the award-winning cast is the hot Tom Blyth who plays a young twink-ish undercover cop, Lucas, who is assigned to patrol a shopping mall restroom to entrap the gay men who cruise there. A time I remember well!! Yes, this did go on. Lucus is already racked with anxiety about his own sexuality and the difficult predicament he finds himself, things are complicated when he falls for one of his targets, a silver haired daddy, Andrew, played by Russell Tovey. HUBBA HUBBA. Just when DID Tovey become a hot daddy? I digress. Set in upstate New York in 1997, the tense and moving thriller drama moves between the past and present, as Lucas grapples with his unresolved feeling.

The relationship between Lucus and Andrew feels effectively raw, largely thanks to the performances from Blyth and Tovey. The expectation of the casual hookups that was synonymous with the era amidst the AIDS crisis proves difficult for Lucas, who longs for something deeper. I also can relate to that too. While I was out and active after the AIDS crisis...I do recall once or twice when I started exploring sex wanting more from casual hookups...confusing sex with feelings. Hey, it's how many of us gay boys learned. I like that the director didn't shy away from showing the sexual nature of their relationship, with fairly graphic depictions of their physical encounters.

Plainclothes is not an easy film to watch, it's uncomfortable and raw and explores a world some know little of, but the way that the director so fearlessly chooses to depict the conflicted nature of his subjects is impressive. I don't know the ideas presented here are new, but they're certainly presented better than many of the films that have come before it. For me it may be a new classic gay film to view periodically as I said it stirred memories of my young gay years, with hook ups, and in some cases trying to go on dates, knowing full well, it was just an excuse to get together to have sex...like in the theater scene in this film. I know that situation well. The film also has a hell of a ending, and a couple twist and turn plots I so did not see coming. I highly recommend a watch.

  1. With so many other hot series and movies at the moment...these shines above the current ones being offered currently. I just finished watching it just the other night and it didn't disappoint, it was actually really good, I 100% recommend it, and for me anyhow d portrayed a realistic complex thing for those liking realistic gay romance, and not just for the hot gay sex or glossy feel to it. Great review too.

    1. I agree....and a very everyday type of men. Your right...not glossy at all.

  2. Saw this at the Provincetown International Film Festival this year, where it won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. It's got a very relaxed, deliberate pace , but I thought it arrived at a powerful conclusion. The ending was a bit of a surprise for me.....Happy and sad at the same time.

    1. It was a well done film and I didn't expect all the plot twist either. And a mixed ending your right.

  3. One of my favorite gay films so far this decade. Their chemistry together was extraordinary! And let's also be honest, it's about who can resist Russel Tovey?

  4. I haven't seen this yet, but the two leads are dee-lish and the story is one a great many of us know all too well..
I need to search it out.

  5. Just getting accepted into the Sundance Festival is an accolade. Haven't seen this or Stepsister, but we did see the Unicorn...found it interesting, sad, and bizarre all at the same time. Now I must seek out the other two.

    1. I adored Deathn of a Unicorn. It was bizarre, but I thought the message of the movie was brilliant. I took it as how greedy man has become and how we ruin so much nature and special beings in general. Plus what's not to like about Paul Rudd and Jenny Ortega? And of course Tea Leoni, I just wanted to slap her character.

    2. Unicorn invoked my "man is the scourge of the planet." Plus Rudd and Leoni were fantastic - as always!

  6. I hadn't heard of "Plainclothes" either but it does look good! I'll put it on my "to watch" list, thanks!

  7. This movie is great! I would call it more of a psychological drama with moments of serious intensity. I was actually worried about Blyth's character. He's a good guy. And that ending? Wow! Plainclothes is available on Mubi, and Apple +.

    1. I don't either gin blossom. Over here when we have a cable network, many of them offer On Demand service with your cable package. So if it ain't on there I don't watch it either.

    2. We have to wait for one of the four TV providers here - BBC, ITV, Channel 5 or Channel 5 to get the rights to it on one of their streaming-equivalent channels before we would ever see such things for free. Jx

  13. Island just recently heard of this and absolutely loved it. Tom Blake definitely won a fan for me. Having seen this and Heated Rivalry ,that everybody's talking about, and enjoy, I have to admit I did like Plainclothes better. Granted the leads in Heated Rivalry are hot, and they portray sports figures still seems unattainable to me. Leads in Plainclothes see much more like your everyday guys which I think is why I enjoyed it more.

  14. Ohhh, so I'll have to watch.
Russel has grown on me. Apparently he's accepted his homosexuality at last? He seemed very resistant to be 'a gay'. I used to watch Being Human (the UK version) because he was an adorable werewolf. This was before his coming out, though.
I kind of like the timeframe. Some people seem to have totally forgotten that AIDS was (and is) a thing...

    XOXO

    1. Bizarre. I don't think there's been a single moment in Russell Tovey's career when he's been "in the closet". He arrived on the scene as a gay actor when he was in The History Boys back in 2006, before he was cast in Being Human, and never made any secret of his sexuality in his whole career. Read an interview with him in Le Pais. Jx

PS I agree with you about how shocking it is that people refer to "The Pandemic" of 2020, yet barely even realise that we had already lived through one, just as terrifying, before...

  15. I already know this movie is going to upset me. I hate knowing undercover cops ruined the lives of so many gay men. And in 2026, it seems we’re headed right back to that. But the actors look like they put in one hell of a performance.

  16. Definitely something I want to see. I love both those actors. How have I not heard of this movie?

  17. The trailer is somewhat captivating, but raw, it's a time that reminds me of yesteryear, many many moons ago, of the T Rooms at the Library in BR, LA. The Librarian was always timing folks when they went into it.

    1. You brought back a fun memory. I recall once a hot older man cruising me in my public library once. He lived nearby, so we walked to his house and had a very nice time indeed.

  20. Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey should be enough a reason to watch this movie. Already downloading '©' as I write this. Thank you Steven for pointing this one to us.
