This past Philadelphia Pride season was one of the best attended Pride yet, surpassing World Pride when they hosted it. And this year it was with honor that the world-renowned orchestra put on its fifth annual free Pride Concert and it was a huge hit. This year Trixie Mattel served as it's host for the evening- between her solo set, a gay Philly History lesson and everything in between, Trixie's charisma, uniqueness, nerve and huge talents kept the Marian Anderson Hall energized all night. The Philadelphia Orchestra led by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, is the one of the few symphonies in the country ...maybe only orchestra to put on a free concert for gay pride... and for the fifth-year running. If you ever get a chance to go hear the orchestra...go, they are truly phenomenal. Trixie paied with the magic of the orchestra, brought Pride to an epic conclusion for Pride Month. Carolyn Kuan led the orchestra that night, the Anna Crusis Feminist Choir, Philadelphia Gay Men's Chorus, the Voices of Pride and the Trans-cendent Choir of Philadelphia all join in for an incredible program. From Madonna, to Gaga, to Bach to Tchaikovsky, Chopin to Bernstein was performed in addition to Dorcas Leung and Kyle Mangold performed songs from The Notebook

ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful...and a great way to introduce new people to the genre! Philly has one of the best symphonies around. All that and had a drag queen host it! Amazing. And she is right Philly was a groundbreaking city when it came to gay rights. marches, and pride concepts. And was always far more accepting then other cities at the time.
ReplyDeleteThe orchestra has always done many things with drag queens especially at Pride. Martha Graham Cracker was always the host till she sadly passed away three months ago. Yannick has got to be one of the most talented and out of the box conductors around currently.

We've never had a Pride that even comes close to that. In "Sin City" you'd think..... I mean, wouldn't you???

ReplyDeleteThe concert was free but you had to book them. They were gone within an hour and a half. The hall was packed. All levels.

I agree. I lived there for 25 years in the area and loved it. I get back at least every two months. It is one of the greatest and diverse cities. Some many gems...... and hot men! Lol.

ReplyDeleteI lived in many US cities and dare say Philly has one, if not the best and fresh symphonies in the US even over the National Symphony. They have always had a very esteemed reputation and aren't afraid to take risks. Bravo to them! I miss Philly more than any other city I have lived in.
