BEARING GIFTS

I saw this video from one of my Instagram friends page, Smart Animalz. Yes, birds do bring gifts to people. Friendship comes on all shapes and sizes. Did you know that Corvids such as crows and ravens, along with magpies have the intelligence of a 7-year-old child? They don't just remember faces, they remember kindness. This behavior is called "gifting". Ravens and magpies will often bring tokens such as shiny objects, bones, feathers or choose something aesthetic like a flower stem or pieces of nature. The behavior is often seen as a way to express gratitude or strengthen social bonds. Almost a way of saying "I see you and you are part of my flock. The video tickled me.

  4. That is so cool! I never knew any of that. I have about 20 crows that sleep each night in a large tree outside my bedroom window each night...and for some reason it feels so protective and soothing for me for some reason. Especially living in the city.

    1. A Scarlet when I lived in my apartment in Bucks County I had a raven that I named Nocturne, and he would literally go window to window to find what room I'm in, and once found he pack his beak on the window to get my attention. What you meant he wants some peanuts

  10. The corvids are the most intelligent of birds. The jackdaws from the church worked out how to use the small bird feeder we have in our garden, normally used by great tits, blue tits and similar sized birds.

    1. I think all birds may be more intelligent than you have credit. This winter I noticed my bluebirds are using my feeders. They generally tend not to be seed eaters but usually only consume live insects mealworms and berries. But they are now using my feeders religiously.

Les corbeaux sont plus intelligents qu’on ne le croit. Ma grand-mère bretonne avait un corbeau qui venait lui rendre visite à la fenêtre de sa cuisine.
