Athena Dion in Dynasty realness!
One thing in the drag culture is having a house. I only ever spawned a small house of 7 queens in the heyday of my New Hope days, and the children carry on. But one legendary house is the House of Dion, a family of fierce queens who are thriving with or without Drag Race. The troupe started by Vegas Dion and continues with its mother Athena Dion, who is currently on Drag Race, not one of my choices to win this season but I do adore her. That title may go to her drag daughter Juicy or to Nini Coco. But Athena is stunning and her drag troupe is triumphing- creating a supportive chosen family, proselytizing queer joy to audiences that extend beyond the LGBT community and taking part in community events and fundraising and succeeding. DeleteIts, True Art, that is dying out here in the cities here in Louisiana, most Drag is centered in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think back on many of the drag queens I liked and legends, the one thing they almost all have consistently is being from the south. Drag in the south is huge business.

ReplyDeleteOh yes Back in the New Hope Days. We had the Dame Borghese, the Countess Borghese, the princess Borghese, Queenie Borghese, Madison Avenue Borghese, and teacup Borghese. And then there was Big Bear Borghese who got me started in boylesque.
