Seen this weekend with the clan. Not sure what took me so long to go see this museum. Over 100 years old, this museum was founded on the belief that access to art and ideas and culture is integral to a vibrant and healthy civic life and I couldn't agree more. It's important to go and see and support these places before it's too late and the billionaires get their greedy mitts on them, and start charging Disneyland admissions!!! Art should be able to be viewed by all. The museum had a great exhibit called the Cone Collection, with over 1, 200 works by Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Renoir. The George A Lucas Collection was very impressive, with over 18,000 French mid-19th century works, and one of the greatest single holdings of French art in the US. I also enjoyed the African and Native American art as well, not to mention there was a pretty impressive sculpture collection in the gardens surrounding the museum. I have been going to Baltimore for years. Shame on me for not going to this place sooner.

ReplyDeleteThe art curation is genius. Art Museums are essential.
That flower/color installation is fab.
XOXO
When I first came across that I thought one of the Villbergs was sitting there!
DeleteHahaha
DeleteVERY that!!!
XOXO
Been there once, we should go back.
ReplyDeleteOh, this looks like heaven. I would love that. But I can’t believe it’s been there more than 100 years and you couldn’t even be bothered to go to the grand opening.
ReplyDeleteHow'd you know I was a vampire?
DeleteBaltimore a la chance de posséder un si beau musée d’art.
ReplyDeleteJ’adore la sculpture figurative en perles colorées :)

LOVE the figure on the bench!
ReplyDeleteThose photographs are simply amazing. Thanks for posting
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, Maddie. It's been 35 years since I got to visit the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. It was such a thrill to see paintings by the Group of Seven (Tom Thompson is my fave), Cornelius Krieghoff, and Van Gogh!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely paintings and sculptures.
ReplyDeleteMy lands...it has been years since I have been to Baltimore. I too am ashamed to admit I have not seen this museum, and it looks to be spectacular. Perhaps a nice trip for my daughter and grandkids on day. Last time I was there was with William years back...we saw the Peabody, the National Aquarium, Divines house and had dinner at the Lexington Market. Is that even still there? Gay friends the next day took us to the Hippo.
ReplyDeleteI was years ago...and from what I remember of the museum was that Delightful, as your pictures depict. So many exhibits and artifacts from so many different cultures and parts of the world. Truly eclectic and vast for it's size. I like many of what you took pictures of.
ReplyDeleteFun post! Glad you checked it out. Having grown up there...I loved it. A smorgasbord of Art. The Matisse collection is terrific. Terrific Corots and a lovely Van Gogh, as well as some terrific Monets. Lots of impressionists, but also some very nice Renaissance pieces -- including a knockout piece by Botticelli.
ReplyDeleteLiving in DC, we aren't all that far. We recently made a point of visiting The Baltimore Museum of Art to see the Kone Sisters collection. The museum holds a fantastic collection. On a side note DC is getting way to expensive, and we just signed on a new place in the Mt Vernon neighborhood. We are excited!
ReplyDeleteSo this is what a getaway looks like when you cut the dirty parts out?
ReplyDeleteBaltimore Museum of Art is good regional museum from what I recall when I lived there. The collection isn't large, but the art ran the gamut from Rembrandt, Hals and Metsu to Lavinia Fontana, Rafael, and Titian, to French impressionists, Klimt, Picasso, Soutine and Kirchner. My favorite....they have a terrific collection of Roman floor mosaics from Turkey.
