GARDEN AND OTHER SUSPECTS

It's been a busy weekend around here. Some time spent in the garden today. The weather of late has been glorious...I dare even say heavenly. Thank heavens the humidity broke...I was beginning to think I had a mushroom farm. Sleeping at night has been so relaxing with cooler temps and open window sleeping, open windows in general.  This weekend I attended my fifth protest since the Great Oaf took office. The Rage Against the Regime protest left me a bit disappointed as it was not attended like the last four, and I wondered if people are giving up. I like to hope it's only because people are vacationing. Friends in Philly said it was a HUGE protest. I can say it's one city that just hates and despises the dump more than others, and it's made funnier only because it's basically the birth of the nation and where much history and important declarations were written. After, I had my good friends Wayne's Pool party and Chicken corn soup picnic to attend, which is always a good time. The soup is actually made in a huge cast iron pot, and hung and cooked over a open fire. It was delish, not to mention all the other foods! Today was spent doing bits and bobs in the garden and making 3 loaves of zucchini bread... my neighbor gave me two very nice size, 13" and thick zucchini's. ( reminds me to give Claudio and Mario a call) But the garden of late still continues forth, giving us color and amazement.

Some of the seed when I planted more wildflowers must have blown into the back garden giving me a nice surprise of more poppies!
Our garden hummingbird
My newest coneflower. The color is called Tomato Soup.
Can't recall the name of this. The whole thing closes up at night.
Meanwhile the Datura Ballerinas have gone insane, and very intoxicating.
Black velvet petunia
Believe it or not this is a hummingbird moth, not a hummingbird. Came out blurry but neat to see. They are actually very pretty, and the only moth to enjoy the daylight.
I also made my famous deviled eggs for cocktails tonight. Made with Coleman's hot mustard and fresh herbs from my garden, so there was that too.

  1. I do miss hummingbirds. Wondrous little things. Your gardens are always glorious and obviously cared for. I wonder who here has ever even heard of deviled eggs.

    1. Devilled eggs were a staple of any party buffet in the UK in the 1970s... Jx

  3. Lovely garden - and I am particularly taken with that "Schiaparelli Shocking Pink" salvia! All salvias are faboo, and we have an ever-expanding collection of them, but there's always room for another... 😜

As for that succulent houseplant, I think it's probably Dorotheanthus Mezoo. Jx

    1. I knew you'd know!!!!!! And funny. no matter how many plants or flowers have, there is ALWAYS room for one more! It seems. That is a new salvia I bought too, and was actually misplaced with no tag. I assumed it was like the purple ones I already had. What a surprise when it bloomed.

  5. Everything looks beautiful and lush, compared to here. And your deviled eggs look sooooo good. I'm sure the fresh herb lends much flavor.

  6. Where to start? I love the poppies! Not enough people grow them, not sure why. I loved the black velvet petunia, and the ballerinas are fabulous. but a nice wildflower garden always makes me happy. So many colors.

    1. Those black petunias caught my eye too - as near 'to being true black as flowers can possibly be.

    2. First year here for poppies, and first ever to be planted here in general to my knowledge. Those black petunia caught my eye to and had to some.

  7. I enjoyed all the color and variety. It's so hot here this Summer that everything is being burned by the sun and turning brown. Maybe we should move East???

and the "my neighbor gave me two very nice size, 13" and thick zucchini's. ( reminds me to give Claudio and Mario a call). LMAO! If they are built like that we could BOTH give them a call.

  8. Love the combination of plants and the feeling of 'country garden' it has in some areas. You have done well this year Mistress. I loved seeing the ballerinas. I never had luck with them. And the tomato soup coneflower is so lively!!! I just love coneflowers.

Must say, what a garden !
We have hummingbirds galore in our So Cal backyard and our roses don’t quit. Sadly they’re hybrids with no scent just big showy blooms and big ass thorns. Though we have one rose bush that has scent, 2 or 3 roses in a vase and they fill the room with their fragrance.
Our honeysuckle covered a fence that had to be replaced, its remnants are gradually growing back.
Haven’t had zucchini bread in ages, but do make date nut bread served with whip cream, or sliced like a sandwich and spread with a layer of whipped cream cheese mixed with liqueur and maraschino cherries.
As for the deviled eggs I make them
with finely chopped herbs, parsley, green onions and black olives mixed with mayo and mustard. On special occasions I top them off with lumpfish caviar. Great with champagne for New Year’s.

    1. I wish I had more hummingbirds. I get quite the assortment of birds so I won't complain too much. Our roses too a going nut...I have scented and some knockouts, and it seems could dead head them every other day. I think that date nut bread sounds delish!!!!!

Count me in for New Years Eve at your place!!!

  12. We are having the cool down here, too. No AC running, windows open, breezes blowing. I know it won't last too long but I am loving it while it's here.
Your garden, as usual, is full of fabulous color, though my favorite is the Black Petunia.
And I, too, hope we're not getting inundated with protests and losing our spark. The midterms are a long way off and we need to keep the energy up.
Resist. Speak up. Cast a goddamned vote!

    1. I agree Bob! I am writing it off to people on summer vacations. And I think Dave rose a good point...the Rage Against the Regime was not as advertised as the others. But I heard Philly had an insane turn out.

  15. Your blue cornflowers/Bachelors' buttons and red poppies are so beautiful! Have you ever thought of planting red, white and blue poppies together? Patriotic display aside, all those poppyseeds could be put to good use in lemon cakes, loaves, cookies and pipes...

  16. We don't have hummingbirds here (I'm back in NZ now), but I'll be looking for some salvias when we move to the new house, for sure! Already have cuttings of a yellow Rose banksia and will take some violets from bro-in-laws garden. All I need is your green fingers!
